Robert Scott Duncanson was one of the few African American professional artists working in the midwest during the nineteenth century. He is best known for shimmering romantic landscapes inspired by the Claude Lorrain, Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School. His enormous murals for Nicholas Longworth's home Belmont remain on view at that residence, now known as the Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Patrick Reason was a nineteenth-century African American artist and engraver who resided in New York and Cleveland. His best known work includes portraits of great statesman and the plight of slaves in America.

Michael Richards Bio - Contemporary African-American Sculptor Michael Rolando Richards
Michael Rolando Richards was a sculptor who perished in the attack World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. He had stayed in his studio on the 92nd Floor of Tower 1, where the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council had studio space for its World Views artists. Richards was one of them that fall. His sculpture Tarbaby and St. Sebastian, 1999, has become an iconic remembrance of the artist and the tragedy that took his life. The body is based on the artist's dressed in a Tuskegee Airmen uniform.

Papier collé is a kind of collage composed only of glued papers on a flat surface, usually a canvas or paper, sometimes in combination with depicted images.

Paula Modersohn-Becker Bio - German Expressionist Painter Paula Modersohn-Becker
Paula Modersohn-Becker painted between 1895 and 1907. Her short life produced a naive Expressionist style, inspired by local German folk art and life as well as the Post-Impressionism and the Fauves, whom she studied in Paris. She was married to Otto Modersohn and was associated with the Worpswede art colony during the turn of the twentieth century. Her close friendship with the sculptor Clara Westhoff-Rilke and poet Rainer Maria Rilke is well known.

Cut-Out - Definition of Cut-Out
Cut-outs by Henri Matisse are made of gouache-painted sheets of paper, carved by scissors into representational and imaginery forms. These shapes are first pinned to a colored surface, as the artist directs an assistant about placement and then glued into place once the work is complete. Matisse's cut-outs are not collages.

A noun to describe a style that features images reduced to simple outlines and shapes, often based on basic geometric forms.

Cloisonnism - Art History Basics on Cloisonnism - late 1880s to 1903
Cloisonnism was a movement created by Paul Gauguin, Emile Bernard, and Louis Anquetin, along with other members of the School of Pont-Aven. Edouard Dujardin invented the name in 1888 in his review of the Salon des Independants. The work seems to emulate the medieval cloisonne metalwork that divides areas of pure color through strong partitions of metal wire. Cloisonnism shows partitions in the lines of black or other strong hues that emphasis contours and flatness. It is Post-Impressionist.

In fact, Andy Warhol revisited his 'Marilyn Series' several times and made some rather curious choices of his own (think: pumpkin, black-brown and lime green).
