Cecilia Beaux - Self-Portrait No 3 - 1894
Unlike many other artists (who shall remain nameless), Beaux has not made her self-portrait more attractive than real life warranted. She honestly was a beautiful woman with excellent bone structure. Page 3.

Many art historians and critics have drawn comparisons between this painting and Mary Cassatt's Lady at the Tea Table (1883-85).

Impressionism - Quiz - Know Your French Impressionist Artists
They were an interesting bunch, the French Impressionists, and drew many non-French Impressionists into their orbit. They changed Western art - and the way we view it - forever. I thought it'd be fun to spotlight seven gentlemen and one lady, in order that you could test your knowledge of the group. If you get all 20 questions correct, kudos! Page 2.

Andy Warhol - Lemon Marilyn - 1962
Like much of the rest of the world in 1962, Andy Warhol was fascinated by the actress Marilyn Monroe's August 5 suicide. Unlike nearly anyone else at the time, he very quickly surmised that Monroe would become an even hotter commodity in death than she'd been in life. History has, of course, proved his suspicions to have been right on the money. Page 2.

The Berlin section of Dada reflects that this city pioneered the then new medium of photomontage, in the context of an overtly political tone. Club Dada artists such as Otto Dix, George Grosz, Raoul Hausmann, John Heartfield and Hannah Höch took this tone to reflect their collective disgust with German nationalism in the struggling post-World War I Deutsches Reich (German Empire). A rare group of collages by Johannes Baader are seen for the first time in the United States in this exhibition. Page 5.

Claude Monet - Shadows on the Sea - The Cliffs at Pourville - 1882
This view is from west of Pourville and includes part of the village, the cliffs between it and nearby Dieppe, and the headlands stretching beyond the harbor there to the northeast. Judging by the heavy use of purple, light present at the top of the western slope and shadow coming from behind him, Monet seems to have painted this in the gathering twilight. Page 5.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir - By the Seashore - 1883
The sitter in By the Seashore is almost certainly Aline Charigot (1859-1915), his frequent model, Significant Other (oh, all right: mistress) and the future Madame Renoir. She'd accompanied him on this particular trip to Guernsey, one of many trips that Renoir undertook at this time in his life. Page 6.

Tilman Riemenschneider - Saint Jerome and the Lion - ca 1490-95
Tilman Riemenschneider (1460-1531) was an important German sculptor of Late Gothic Europe. In his Saint Jerome and the Lion (ca. 1490-95), the seated theologian, dressed in cardinal's robes, holds a lion's left foreleg before removing a painful barb from its paw. Known largely for his wooden sculptures, Riemenschneider's statue in alabaster, originally polychromed, is a rarity. Page 2.

Clyfford Still - PH 77 - 1937
An intimate show at the Denver Art Museum displays 13 works that were sealed in Clifford Still's estate after his death. They're a delectable prelude to the inauguration of a brand new museum, named after the artist, that will be the DAM's next-door neighbor when the building opens in 2010. Page 3.
