Jesus' Lesson of the Withered Fig Tree (Mark 11:20-26) - Analysis and Commentary
Jesus explains the power and importance of faith - it is faith in God that gave him the power to curse the fig tree and make it wither overnight and similar faith on the disciples' part will give them the power to work other wonders. They may even be able to move mountains, though that is arguably a bit of hyperbole on his part.

Jesus' Messianic Secret: Did Jesus Conceal His Identity?
Throughout the gospels, but especially in the gospel of Mark, we have regular examples of JesusÂ’ admonishing both people and demons not to reveal to others who he truly was. This has puzzled many scholars and given rise to a number of explanations, including the idea that even Jesus was unaware of his full identity.

Jesus' Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen (Mark 12:1-12) - Analysis and Commentary
Jesus' parable of the wicked husbandmen is one of his most important, and for good reason it occupies the central position of Jesus' Jerusalem ministry. This parable is brimming with allegorical elements to a large number of Old Testament passages, all of which would have been meaningful to early Christian-Jewish audiences but probably meaningless to Gentiles who read or listened.

Jesus' Parables: Candles and Seeds (Mark 4:21-34) - Analysis and Commentary
Having explained the parable of the sower of seeds to his apostles, Jesus launches into several more parables. The timeline of events here is confusing because we were just reading about Jesus talking alone to his apostles, but he is now teaching parables to them - or have we shifted back to an earlier time when he was speaking to the crowd? And why are the explanations of the parables set right alongside the parables themselves?

Jesus' Preparations for Passover with his Disciples (Mark 14:12-16) - Analysis and Commentary
Was Jesus' final meal with his disciples also a Passover meal? That's been the general assumption by Christian theologians and there are some signs that this is the case. There are, however, also signs that it's not the case - the text is unclear on this point.

Jesus' Resurrection & Ascension: Contradictions in the Gospel Accounts of Resurrection & Ascension of Jesus
Christians point to Jesus' resurrection as one of the things which distinguishes Christianity from all other religions. After all, the founders of other religions (like Muhammad and Buddha) are all dead; Jesus conquered death. Or did he? For something so important and central to the message, theology, and very nature of Christianity, it's curious that the gospel authors would all have such radically different stories about what happened.

Jesus' Resurrection Story (Mark 12:18-27) - Analysis and Commentary
In the previous passage, Temple authorities sent Pharisees and Herodians to trap Jesus into saying something that would get him into trouble. They failed, evidently teaching the authorities that if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Now several Sadducees meet with Jesus in order to pose a new challenge to him.

Jesus' Resurrection and the Empty Tomb (Mark 16:1-8) - Analysis and Commentary
After the Jewish sabbath, which occurs on Saturdays, women who were present at Jesus' crucifixion come to his tomb to anoint his corpse with spices. These are things his close disciples should have done, but Mark portrays Jesus' female followers as consistently showing more faith and courage than the men.

Jesus' Teaching on Divorce (Mark 10:1-12) - Analysis and Commentary
As is usually the case wherever Jesus goes, he is accosted by large crowds of people - it's not clear if they are there to hear him teach, to watch him perform miracles, or both. As far as we know, though, all he does is teach. This, in turn, brings out the Pharisees who are looking for ways to challenge Jesus and undermine his popularity with the people. Perhaps this confrontation is supposed to help explain why Jesus stayed away from the Judean population centers for so long.

Jesus, Sinners, and Modern Day Christians (Mark 2:13-17) - Analysis and Commentary
Jesus is depicted here preaching again and there are many people listening. It isn't explained whether this crowd also gathered in order for him to heal people or whether by this point the large crowds are attracted by his preaching alone. It also isn't explained what a 'multitude' is - the numbers are left to the imagination of the audience.

Jesus, The Son of Man: Jesus' Identity and Means of Self-Identification - What Does 'Son of Man' Mean?
In the gospels Jesus is frequently depicted as referring himself as the 'Son of man.' What this label means has been the subject of a great deal of debate among theologians and biblical scholars, with no clear resolution in sight. There are many possible uses, all of which serve to complicate more than they resolve.

Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet - Discovering Jesus, He Looks LIke Us!
As suggested earlier, Ehrman is critical of those researchers who just 'happen' to discover in Jesus the same sorts of ideas and concerns which they themselves have. Reading their own beliefs into the early texts, Jesus becomes a tool for some to validate their own agendas

JesusÂ’ Authority to Forgive Sins & Heal the Sick (Mark 2:6-12) - Analysis and Commentary
If God is the only one with authority to forgive people's sins, then Jesus assumes a great deal in forgiving the sins of a man who came to him to have his palsy healed. Naturally, there are a few who wonder about this and question whether Jesus should do it.

JesusÂ’ Temptation and Testing in the Wilderness (Mark 1:9-13) - Analysis and Commentary
Immediately after baptism, Jesus is driven into the wilderness for forty days where he is tempted by Satan. ItÂ’s not clear what it means to say that Jesus was 'driven.' Did he not want to go? Did God force him? Was he simply overcome with an irresistible urge after hearing voices?

Jewish Messiahs: From the Galilee to Crown Heights - Messiahs and Their Followers
Messiahs, and their followers, are desperate people. They are typically social outcasts who suffer doubly because they are outcasts of a religious or ethnic group which is itself something of an outcast in the wider society, either through foreign invaders or by being a minority in an oppressive society. As far as the movement is concerned, the 'end' is near and the Jewish people must pull together to form a unified front.

Jewish Views of the Ten Commandments: Religious Issues in the Ten Commandments
There is a popular perception that the Ten Commandments are 'the commandments' of Jewish religious tradition, but this is mistaken. The Hebrew scriptures contain 613 commandments in addition to these ten. This does not mean, however, that all commandments are equal. Jewish scholars have generally treated the Ten Commandments as basic or ideological foundations to the all the rest.

Jihad in the West - Muslim Attitudes Toward Others
This disparaging attitude of traditional Islam against outsiders is not at all unlike the attitude of Westerners engaged in colonization around the world. For them, Europe was the height of human civilization, containing within it all of the highest and best ideals. It was their job to bring those ideals and benefits to the rest of humanity, raising it up out of barbarism. Quite often this was closely accompanied by encouraging people to convert to Christianity.

John Locke on Reason and Faith: Why Resort to Faith with Reason Fails?
Debates about religion often end up becoming debates about reason and faith - in particular, whether faith is a valid means for acquiring knowledge and what the limits of reason might be. Religious believers often say that faith is important, but this seems to be contradicted by the extent to which they rely on reason. What's the point of only using reason when it seems agreeable, then switching to faith as soon as reason is inconvenient?

Atheists are the most despised minority in America; this is demonstrated most clearly by the fact that more people would be willing to vote for any other minority - Muslim, gay, female - than vote for an atheist for president. This discrimination is fueled by bigoted prejudices about atheists' values and morality, and you can tell a lot about a person's character based on whether they promote or oppose this bigotry. Sadly, John McCain is on record as supporting anti-atheist bigotry.

John McCain is widely regarded as a "sensible" Republican who is "independent" of many traditional Republican constituencies. Neither view is correct: John McCain is not sensible when it comes to questions of church/state separation and, at least when it comes to the radical Christian Right, he isn't the least bit independent. McCain gladly repeats traditional Christian Nationalist lies about America being a "Christian Nation" and appears more than happy to abandon secular government.

We may talk about male privilege, white privilege, or Christian privilege in isolation, but in practice one form of privilege is consistently used to buttress the others. One cannot be eliminated without at least weakening the others, and one cannot be challenged without implicitly challenging the others. This means that anyone promoting one is implicitly promoting the other; sometimes, though, all get promoted together and explicitly and it appears that John McCain believe in them.

John, the son of Zebedee, was called along with this brother James to be one of Jesus' twelve apostles who would accompany him on his ministry. John and his brother James were given the nickname 'Boanerges' (sons of thunder) by Jesus; some believe this was a reference to their tempers.

John the Baptist (Mark 1:1-8) - Analysis and Commentary
The opening of Mark’s gospel says more about John the Baptist than Jesus. John’s depiction is consistent with Jewish eschatological expectations: dressed and acting like Elijah, John prepares the way for the Messiah as well as the 'last days.' The existence of John the Baptist is disputed by some. The only extra-biblical mention of him is found in Josephus’ Antiquities and is arguably an interpolation — a later addition by someone else.

John the Baptist: Profile & Biography of John the Baptist, New Testament Prophet
John the Baptist (also: John the Baptizer) appears in each of the four gospels as a figure preaching the immediate coming of a Messiah. John is depicted in a manner consistent with Jewish eschatological expectations: dressed and acting like Elijah, John is preparing the way for the Messiah as well as the 'last days.' Gospel stories suggest that John's ministry was popular and successful. According to Luke, he was born into a priestly family.

Jonathan Z. Smith on the Definition of Religion: Does Religion Exist? What is Religion?
...while there is a staggering amount of data, phenomena, of human experiences and expressions that might be characterized in one culture or another, by one criterion or another, as religion - there is no data for religion. Religion is solely the creation of the scholar's study. It is created for the scholar's analytic purposes by his imaginative acts of comparison and generalization. Religion has no existence apart from the academy.

Jones v. Clear Creek School District (1992)
If government officials do not have the authority to write prayers for public school students or even to encourage and endorse prayers, can they allow the students themselves vote on whether or not to have one of their own recite prayers during school? Some Christians tried this method of getting official prayers into public schools and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that it's constitutional for students to vote on having prayers during graduation ceremonies.

The name 'Jordan' comes from the Hebrew word 'descender' because of the way it descends from its sources. The Jordan is the world's lowest river, flowing well below sea level for most of its course: although it starts at more than 1,000 feet above sea level, it ends at 1,300 feet below after traveling 104 miles (straight line -- the winding course is closer to 200 miles).

Joseph took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in linen, and buried it in a tomb that he may have prepared for himself.

Joseph of Arimathea: Image of Arimathea, traditional birth place of Joseph of Arimathea
Luke locates Arimathea in Judea, but aside from the association with Joseph, there is no solid information about where it was and what might have happened there. Some scholars have identified Arimathea with Ramathaim-Zophim in Ephraim, the place where Samuel was born. Other scholars say that Arimathea is Ramleh.

Joseph of Arimathea might pass through the gospels very briefly, but he enjoyed a lively role in later Christian legends. According to various accounts, Joseph of Arimathea traveled to England where he founded the first Christian Church, was the protector of the Holy Grail, and became an ancestor of Lancelot or even of King Arthur himself.

Josephus is also known as Flavius Josephus and Joseph Ben Matthias (Yosef Ben Mattityahu). It is not until the reign of Josiah, another hundred years later in the mid-7th century BCE that organized efforts to eradicate worship of Baal are undertaken.

Journey Toward Comfort, Strength and Faith in Difficult Times: Where Was God?
Early on, Levy makes an interesting albeit contradictory move in order to steer clear of the rocks and shoals that threaten every theist who inquires too deeply into the absence of God when tragedy strikes. She denies the validity of the question 'Why did this happen' and instead proposes that it is more important that we ask 'How will I go on.' To an extent I agree with her; it is this question which informs the majority of her book and which in the end makes it good.

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus (Mark 14:10-11) - Analysis and Commentary
In contrast with the great faith of the woman in the previous verses who wasted expensive oil in anointing Jesus, Mark presents us with Judas Iscariot, the villain of Jesus' passion narrative. Every story needs a villain and Judas fills this role well, although it's unclear whether he should be condemned for this because he was, after all, simply carrying out the tasks God needed.

Judas Iscariot the Apostle: Who Was Judas Iscariot? Why Did Judas Betray Jesus? Should Judas be a Saint?
Judas Iscariot is known as the companion of Jesus who betrayed him - but what and how did he betray? That isn't clear. He points out Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. This is hardly an action worthy of payment because Jesus wasn't exactly in hiding. In John, he doesn't even do that much. Judas doesn't actually do anything except fulfill the narrative and eschatological need for the Messiah to be betrayed by someone.

Judas Iscariot: Contradictions in the Gospel Accounts of Judas' Betrayal of Jesus
There was no option for Jesus not to be executed because without his crucifixion, he could not rise again in three days and thus save humanity. To be executed, though, he had to be betrayed to the Jewish authorities - if Judas hadn't done it, someone else would have. In Mark, the motive of greed is ascribed to Judas. Matthew agrees with Mark but Luke claims that Judas was led astray by Satan. John, on the other hand, attributes the motivation to both Satan and a penchant for theft.

Judas Iscariot: Profile & Biography of Judas Iscariot, Disciple & Apostle who Betrayed Jesus
Every story needs a villain and Judas Iscariot fills this role in the gospels. He is the apostle who betrayed Jesus and helps the Jerusalem authorities arrest him. Judas may have enjoyed a privileged position among Jesus' apostles - John describes him as the band's treasurer and he is often present at important times. John also describes him as a thief, but it seems implausible that a thief would have joined such a group or that Jesus would have made a thief their treasurer.

Judea: Profile of the Region of Judea in Palestine - History, Geography, Religion
Judea is the Greco-Roman form of Judah, the region in Palestine named (according to Genesis) after the fourth son of Jacob and his first wife, Leah. Political authority over Judea was often located in Jerusalem, but Roman rulers were typically based in Caesarea on the coast. It was economically dependent on Jerusalem and provided little agriculturally aside from olives and grapes.

Judge Roy Moore's Beliefs: What Does He Think About Religion, America, And The Ten Commandments?
Perhaps the most important and fundamental idea of his, one which plays a role in his other beliefs and in his actions, is that America is a Christian Nation. At a Christian rally in Tennessee in early 2002 he told supporters that the United States was founded as a Christian nation and that Christians should 'take back our land.'

Judge Roy Moore's Court Battles - What Has He Done And How Have The Courts Ruled?
When Roy Moore became state circuit court judge in Alabama in 1992, he embarked upon a path where he would be less an impartial judge of othersÂ’ cases and more the passionate player in his own legal battles. It is not clear whether he had any idea just how much attention his actions would draw, but it seems unlikely that he was completely ignorant of what might happen.

Judge Roy Moore's Decisions: What Does He Think About Religion, America, And The Ten Commandments?
Roy MooreÂ’s beliefs about the relationship between his religion and government are sometimes reflected in his decisions. In early 2002 he ruled against a lesbian seeking custody of her children from her ex-husband. In his decision, he labeled homosexuality 'a sin' which 'violates both natural and revealed law,' quoting both Genesis and Leviticus.

Judge Roy Moore: Reactions - What Do People Think About His Ten Commandments Monument?
When Roy Moore was elected to the state Supreme Court, that victory could be attributed in large part to his fame and popularity over his display of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom. He campaigned as the 'Ten Commandments Judge' and he promised to help restore God and Christianity to American law and government. Clearly, Moore can count on a great deal of support from citizens of Alabama.

Judge Roy Moore: Reactions - What Do People Think About His Ten Commandments Monument?
Opposition to his efforts can also be found within the religious community. Although fundamentalists may like to see the government express support for their narrow religious vision, many others who are devoutly religious can clearly see the dangers inherent in such acts and make no effort to hide their support for keeping church and state separate.

Judge Roy Moore: Ten Commandments & the Law
Roy Moore is a genuine celebrity for the Religious Right in America - his perpetual court cases over his various displays of the Ten Commandment have become a popular cause for fundamentalists around the country. Because of this, the court cases involving Moore play an important role in the relationship not only between church and state, but also between separationists and AmericaÂ’s religious right.

Because of this, the court cases involving Moore play an important role in the relationship not only between church and state, but also between separationists and America’s religious right.

Judge Roy Moore: Who Cares? Does It Really Matter If He Posts The Ten Commandments?
Does it really matter if Roy Moore opens his court sessions with prayers, places a plaque of the Ten Commandments in his courtrooms, or installs a massive monument to the Ten Commandments in Alabama Judicial Building? Are any of these actions really unconstitutional? The answers to both questions is an unqualified Yes.

Judge Roy MooreÂ’s Anti-Catholicism: Picking Protestantism Over Catholicism
Some conservative Republicans have complained that Democratic Senators had been using religious tests which effectively prohibited devout Catholics from being appointed as federal judges. It was suggested that the Democrats were engaged in anti-Catholic discrimination. Why havenÂ’t we heard similar complaints bout Judge Roy Moore in Alabama?
