Preparing for a Corvette Engine Swap
The latest development with the About.com project 1977 Corvette – nicknamed “Mistress Quickly” – is a new engine! The engine that was in the car when we bought it had zero compression in the #1 cylinder due to a bad vacuum brake booster that the previous owner had ignored for too long.

Pulling the Old Engine
Pulling an engine is a big deal – the potential for damage to your Corvette’s body and paint work, or even injury to yourself, is huge. Take your time and be sure of what you’re doing.

Engine Swap Installation Tips

Reconnecting The New Engine
The reconnecting process is essentially the reverse of the procedure you used to get the old engine out.

Tuning Up
Once we had it put together, an oil change was in order – just so we’d know what oil we have in it and when it was put in. As always, we used Royal Purple HPS 10W40 synthetic oil, because it has the zinc additive that older engines need to preserve their cams. At the same time, we also installed one of the new Royal Purple oil filters.

1962 Custom Corvette - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
A popular modern modification plan is to take a basket case C1 or C2 Corvette and restore it using all modern underpinnings and drivetrain. The result is a “resto-mod” car that costs well over $100,000 to complete, but which offers a new car driving experience. You can usually tell these cars from original restorations by examining the wheels and brakes, or by checking under the hood.

1963 Corvette Rondine - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
The rarest Corvette ever made is the 1963 Rondine. This Corvette chassis was bodied by Pininfarina for the 1963 Paris Auto Show. In 2008, the Pininfarina museum sold the car at the Barrett-Jackson auction for a breathtaking $1,600,000.

1963 Grand Sport - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
This is one of the legendary 1963 Corvette Grand Sports. Just five of these cars were modified in secret by Zora Arkus-Duntov for racing purposes. This one was driven by Bob Bondurant. Today, a proven original 1963 Grand Sport sells for $6 million to $10 million. The first Grand Sport used a 327 cubic inch engine, but later cars were gifted with a 377 cubic inch engine producing 485 horsepower.

1965 Corvette Convertible - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
A fancy paint job is among the best modifications because it’s not permanent. A patriotic paint job like this on a classic 1965 convertible ‘Vette is sure to draw smiles and waves on the road, and it will win trophies at any car show or cruise-in you can find.

1967 Corvette Convertible - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
This 1967 convertible has been customized in a “race-like” manner, but it’s still a legal street car. If you look closely, you can see the American-flag painted cover on the engine, which would never appear on a real vintage race car. A car like this is great fun at car shows, and performs well on the road, too.

American Le Mans Series C6.R - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
This is the 2007 Corvette Racing C6.R from the American Le Mans Series. In 2007, these cars still used a 7.0-liter LS7.R engine, producing 590 horsepower. This car also used custom carbon brake rotors. Corvette Racing’s cars have won 77 ALMS races, and eight consecutive ALMS championships.

C4 Drag Racer - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
This C4 has been extensively modified for drag racing, including a hood scoop to draw air into the aftermarket supercharger. Look at the rear wheels and you can see huge drag racing tires. Fitting these tires requires gutting the chassis behind the driver and fabricating all new suspension, frame, and bodywork.

C6R at Le Mans - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
The Corvette Racing C6.R at the scrutineering inspection for the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Corvettes have won the GT1 class at Le Mans every year since 2001. Unlike some racing Corvettes, the Le Mans and American Le Mans Corvettes use many factory parts, including the hydroformed aluminum frame of the C6 ZR1

Classic Rally Corvette - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
This C2 ‘Vette is another race-inspired road car. Shown here preparing to compete in the Monte Shelton Northwest Classic Rally, the car features modern steel racing wheels, a cut-down windshield, and a track-ready roll bar. There may be more valuable Corvettes out there, but this one could be the most fun.

Corvette Summer - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
For the ultimate tribute to modified ‘Vettes, go and get a copy of Mark Hamill’s 1978 fun movie “Corvette Summer.” The nominal co-star is Annie Potts, who won an Oscar for her performance, but the real star of the show is the most intensely modified Corvette in history. Switched to right-hand drive, this car is the perfect expression of the axiom “it ain’t done until it’s overdone.” The car chase scenes alone are worth the price of the DVD.

Ferrari Replica Corvette - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
There’s such a thing as going too far. This “Ferrari” is actually a modified Corvette. Unless they started with an inexpensive C4, chances are it was worth more before it was turned into a movie prop.

SCCA Racing Corvette - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
This C5 is legal to race in SCCA's GT-1 class or in Trans-Am pro racing. You can see here that the bodywork is made to be a “silhouette” approximation of the original C5 Corvette. But as far removed from a street car as this is, it’s still a Corvette and still shares much of the street car’s DNA.

Trans-Am Corvette - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
Another ultimate racing machine, this DerHaag C5 Corvette was made for competition in the SCCA Trans-Am series. It uses a tubular steel space frame, custom bodywork, suspension, and a 600 horsepower engine. The entire body can be taken off in less than a minute by an experienced pit crew.

Vintage Racing Corvette - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
Vintage racing is home to many Corvettes that once languished as neglected barn finds. This 1969 C3 427 convertible is owned by Eric Dolson and campaigned in vintage racing events in the Pacific Northwest. Vintage racing organizations are very strict about originality, so this car uses its original engine, transmission, suspension, and brake designs.

Modified Corvettes - Pictures of Modified Corvettes
Corvettes are among the most frequently modified sports cars in the world. Modifying your 'Vette for the street can range from custom one-off body designs commissioned by Chevy as auto show concept cars to simple adding a body kit or wheel package. Racing Corvettes are frequently modified so far that there’s very little left that ever saw the inside of the Corvette factory. What follows is an image gallery of modified Corvettes, ranging from mild to wild.
