Drawing a fashionable, see-and-be-seen GLBT set, Liverpool 100 is a few blocks south and east of the Amberes gay club strip in Zona Rosa, but still pretty close to all the action. The attractive gay dance club and has several different bars on and packs in substantial crowds on weekends (as well as Wednesday nights). For the young, trendy set, spending time here is de rigueur. Drinks are a bit pricier than some of the other gay bars in Zona Rosa.

Mazatlan's longest-running gay club, Pepe Toro's is prominently located near a central intersection of the city's clubbing corridor, the Zona Dorada (i.e., Golden Zone), and it's been an anchor of the city's gay scene since the early '90s. Competition from the more recently opened Passion Club disco, up the street, has cut into the crowds at Pepe Toro to some extent, especially among the younger set, but this relatively spacious gay disco still packs in sizable crowds on high-season weekends. Now a local institution with a huge following among Tucson's LGBT community, Bentley's got its start back when coffeehouses were still something of an innovation, at least outside of the West Coast. Opened in 1984, this attractive, art-filled cafe serving delicious coffee and tea drinks, healthful and well-prepared meals throughout the day, and free WiFi is practically adjacent to the University of Arizona campus. The chai and mocha milkshakes are decadent and not to be missed. Page 7.

I'm not going to lie - I really wasn't in the mood for my dinner at Janos, the critically lauded restaurant at the posh Westin La Paloma Resort, the night I tried it. The dining room felt a bit too formal and stuffy on this particular crisp-aired evening, and at first glance, the menu seemed to favor rich, heavy fare - steaks, rack of lamb, surf-and-turf. In the end, however, I ended up devouring one of the best meals I've ever eaten in Arizona (and I've had many great ones in this state!). Page 3.

Popular for dancing on weekends, IBT's also has some popular weekly parties, such as Karaoke on the Patio parties on Sundays, Wednesday drag shows, and occasional guest DJs. This funky hub of musicians, artists, students, backpackers, gays and lesbians, and colorful characters is more than a cheap lodging option - it's also home to a terrific live music club and bar, a laid-back coffeehouse and cafe, and even a banquet space (Copper Hall). The 1919 hotel has 40 basic, individually decorated rooms. Page 4.

The cozy, unpretentious, and reasonably priced cafe inside the similarly quirky Hotel Congress, the Cup Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as presenting a great happy hour from 4 to 7 each afternoon (plus a late-night nosh menu from 11 until midnight). One highlight here is the well-chosen wine list (many varietals are available by the glass), with bottles available in a broad range of prices. Early in the day, Cup Cafe is more of a coffeehouse and lunch room. Page 10.

Perhaps no natural feature defines southern Arizona, and Tucson in particular, more famously than the towering, forklike, slow-growing saguaro cactus, for which Saguaro National Park is named. This 91,500-acre park is divided into two section, which bracket the city of Tucson on the east and west (they're about 30 miles, or a one-hour drive, apart from one another). Scenic loop roads and many miles of hiking trails wind through each section, although most of Saguaro National Park is wilderness.

This slightly off-the-beaten-path lounge specializes in foofy, old-school, tropical cocktails.

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train provides scenic rides through the breathlessly beautiful San Juan Mountains, right up to the sleepy mining town of Silverton. The train has been in operation continuously since 1879 - back in the day, it hauled silver ore. Rides leave from Durango's pale-yellow rail depot, which now contains a museum about the train's history. Page 3.
