D'Amico Kitchen Minneapolis - D'Amico Restaurant Chambers Hotel - Chambers Kitchen Minneapolis - Le Meridien Chambers Restaurant - D'Amico Osteria
Opened in fall 2009 in the slick, white-on-white Chambers Kitchen space formerly occupied by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the elegant but less fussy D'Amico Kitchen Osteria & Bar is the now top dog in the locally esteemed D'Amico restaurant empire. By all accounts, the new venture is working out nicely - the dining room retains the chic aesthetic of Le Meridien Chambers Hotel, and the kitchen serves three meals daily, including weekend brunch and lighter fare from a bar menu. The outdoor courtyard lounge at the trendy Le Meridien Chambers Hotel, the Gorilla Bar has been a favorite spot for cocktails and conversation among the see-and-be-set since the property opened in 2006. Comfy chairs, potted plants, and twinkly lighting make for a festive vibe on warm Minneapolis evenings. And during the city's frigid winters? The space holds its very own crystal-clear ice bar, complete with a fire pit and imaginative sculptures. Who says Minnesota winters can't be sexy and fun? Page 11.

Rebranded as part of Starwood's prestigious Le Meridien hotel brand in 2010, the Le Meridien Chambers was opened by noted art collector Ralph Burnet in 2006. The sleek, contemporary hotel - carved out of a pair of older buildings (one had contained an adult bookstore for many years) has been part of a renaissance of hip boutique hotels that have transformed the Minneapolis lodging scene in recent years. The gay-popular hotel across the street from the Brass Rail nightclub is super swanky. Page 5.

Part of the Harbor Magic Hotels collection, which comprises three distinctive, gay-friendly boutique hotels in Baltimore, the historic Admiral Fell Inn anchors one of the city's most charming neighborhoods, Fells Point. The stately, redbrick structure is made up of seven different connected buildings, some dating as far back as the 1770s - at different times, the building has served as a boarding house, theater, and - perhaps most interestingly - as a YMCA for Seamen. Cafe Hon Baltimore - Baltimore Honfest 2013 - John Waters Cafe Hon - Baltimore Diners - Cafe Hon Hampden The Avenue - Kitschy Diners - Hon Bar
The huge pink flamingo over the door of Cafe Hon is a sign to some that this high-camp-themed diner in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood is ground-zero for kitsch fetishists, and evidence to others that both the restaurant and the many self-consciously groovy businesses nearby have become too touristy. If you're visiting from out of town, you're a fan of John Waters movies (he's shot a number of scenes in his films around Hampden), and you appreciate campy style, it's worth checking out Cafe Hon. For many years, gay and lesbian revelers have been venturing to Club 1722 (the establishment on the left in this picture) on Friday and Saturday nights after the booze-licensed bars and nightclubs around the city have closed. This diminutive but rocking space opens at 1:45, and the dancing (to a wide range of DJ-spun music) lasts for many hours - until the sun has risen, at the very least. For fans of the gay after-hours scene, this place is a must. Page 9.

Several Baltimore neighborhoods have undergone significant gentrification over the years, and Federal Hill is one of the most striking examples - this historic hilltop neighborhood with great views of downtown's bustling Inner Harbor also has a relatively sizable GLBT population. The neighborhood has several notable attractions, including the fully restored Cross Street Market, the American Visionary Art Museum, and the quirky, intriguing mix of cafes, bars, and shops along South Charles Street. Since 1991, Grand Central (known until 2003 as Central Station) has been a gay-nightlife mainstay of Baltimore, and an anchor of the bar district along North Charles Street in Mt. Vernon. The gay and lesbian entertainment complex consists of several different bars and lounges, including a large dance floor as well as a separate upstairs lesbian bar called Sappho's - although everybody of both genders is welcome throughout the place. Baltimore's definitive gay piano cabaret, Jay's on Read is a friendly, welcoming little spot that's popular with pretty much anybody who loves singing along - or even just listening - to show tunes and popular jazz standards. Pianists play on the bar's beautifully restored vintage grand piano, and happily take requests from the crowd, which although predominantly gay most nights includes plenty of others who enjoy this kind of entertainment. One of Baltimore's landmark icons, the Washington Monument rises some 178 high above the center of Mt. Although this Washington Monument is shorter by more than 350 feet than the more famous Washington Monument in nearby Washington, DC, this particular version is much older - it was completed in 1829, making it the first in the country. There isn't necessarily a clear gay section at any of the broad, sandy beaches in Long Beach, but the area of Belmont Shore beach across from the gay bar Club Ripples has the strongest GLBT following. This part of the beach adjoins a parking area with metered spots. Belmont Shore is popular for kite-flying, jogging, fishing off the pier (several blocks west of here), and biking or blading along a paved path that curves through the center of the beach. It's always a fun mix of people. Page 6.

Stops in downtown Long Beach include this one pictured here at 1st Street and Long Beach Boulevard, plus stops at Pacific Avenue Transit Mall (at West 1st St.) and at 4th and Pacific and 4th and Long Beach Boulevard. This two-story gay nightclub has been catering to the GLBT community since it opened in the early 1970s, just across the street from Belmont Shores's gay beach. Page 20.

Executive Suite is the closest gay club in Long Beach to the 405 Freeway - it's about 3 miles east of downtown, and it operates with a different approach than other GLBT hangouts in the city: it's open only Thursday through Saturday, and each night is geared toward a different crowd (Latin on Thursdays, gay guys on Fridays, and lesbians on Saturdays). Of these events, the lesbian nights are highly popular, but all have their fans. Generally, it's about dancing and clubbing here. Page 15.

Falcon Long Beach - Falcon Gay Bar - Hispter Bars Long Beach - Mixed Gay/Straight Bars Long Beach - Falcon East Broadway - Long Beach Happy Hour Bars
The story of the Falcon is one of those cautionary tales of what happens when an old-school dive bar that few but hard-core, day-long drinkers ever paid much attention to develops serious cachet among hipsters and poseurs. Personally, I had a great time in this place, but I was an outsider stopping by for a drink. Longtime locals appear more divided on the Falcon's increasing popularity, some uneasy about the crowds. Other like that the Falcon draws a genuine mix of Long Beach revelers. Page 2.

Hot Java is just a 10-minute walk north of the beach, too, which is an excellent place to carry your iced latte, Italian soda, slice of cake, or dish of gelato. Mineshaft Tavern Long Beach - Mineshaft Leather Bar - Long Beach Gay Cruise Bars - Leather and Levi's Long Beach - Long Beach Men's Cruising Bars
Like many classic leather bars, the Mineshaft has steadily transitioned over time to more of a Levi's and T-shirts bar - it's still very much a guys' hangout, with a somewhat cruisy vibe (at least late on weekend evenings), but this unpretentious neighborhood bar with a mock-Western facade is mostly just a laid-back spots for affordable drinks and shooting pool. Dim lighting and a rustic wood interior give the Mineshaft a bit more character than some of the other gay bars along East Broadway. Page 16.

Launched in 1934 and tied up in Long Beach Harbor since it ended passenger service in 1967, the 12-deck, 1,000-foot Queen Mary is one of the city's most recognizable attractions. Today the sleek, Art Deco beauty is a working hotel - a fun, if quirky, place to stay that's appealing for a chance to experience the ship's grandeur. Accommodations and amenities, however, are understandably a bit dated. Even if you don't stay here, come by for a tour - several kinds are offered.

The diminutive El Patio is a beloved standby of Nob Hill and the nearby campus of the University of New Mexico, a favorite spot for filling, affordable, and generally very spicy and authentic New Mexican fare: blue-corn enchiladas, sopaipillas stuffed with beans and cheese (these fried-dough confections are also served following the meal, with honey, as is tradition in New Mexico), huevos rancheros, carne adovada, and other variations on the usual suspects, all prepared consistently well. Farina Pizzeria Albuquerque - Farina Pizza & Wine Bar - Albuquerque Best Pizza - Albuquerque Wine Bars - Farina ABQ Pizza
Since it opened beside its sister restaurant, the also excellent Artichoke Cafe, cozy and convivial Farina Pizzeria has been serving some of the finest pizza in the state - think of happily irregular-shaped hand-tossed pies with blistering crusted (thanks to inferno-like brick ovens). There's a long list of creative toppings, including tallegio cheese, salsiccia sausage, truffle oil, chopped imported olives, and farmhouse goat cheese with leeks. Page 4.

Flying Star Downtown Albuquerque - Albuquerque Gay-Friendly Coffeehouses - Downtown Albuquerque Best Breakfasts - WiFi Hotspots ABQ - ABQ Flying Star
One of the most architecturally distinctive of the several Flying Star cafes set around Albuquerque (there's also one in Santa Fe), the downtown ABQ Flying Star occupies the 1950 Southern Union Gas Co. building, which was designed by the seminal New Mexico architect John Gaw Meem. The two-floor space with both a main dining room and a quieter upstairs loft area is a favorite hangout of students, downtown offices workers, artists, and tourists. It serves delicious breakfast fare. Page 28.

Hotel Parq Central - Albuquerque Parq Central Hotel - Best Hotels Albuquerque - Albuquerque Boutique Hotels - Gay-Friendly Lodging Albuquerque
The hip and stylish Hotel Parq Central has been a game-changing addition to the increasingly notable neighborhood of eastern downtown Albuquerque, often dubbed EDo. The three-story Italianate building, which was constructed in 1926 as Santa Fe Hospital and magically transformed into an upscale boutique hotel after an impressive - and ingenious - remodel, has long been a fixture along Central Avenue (old Route 66), just off I-25. KiMo Theatre Albuquerque - Pueblo Deco Architecture - KiMo Theatre Pictures - KiMo Theatre Facade - Pueblo Revival Art Deco Buildings - KiMo ABQ
In addition to being a prominent performance space that hosts theater, concerts, and dance, the striking KiMo Theatre is one of the world's seminal examples of a relatively scarce architectural style: Pueblo Art Deco. The building opened in 1927, designed by Oreste Bachechi, with elements of both the Pueblo Revival for which New Mexico is known and the then-modish Art Deco ornamentation that had become in vogue for movie cinemas of the time. Route 66 Albuquerque - Route 66 Nob Hill Photos - New Mexico Route 66 Architecture - Albuquerque Gay Neighborhoods - Nob Hill Shopping District
Route 66, known locally as Central Avenue, is the most historic east-west thoroughfare in Albuquerque - it gently descends down a hill from the city's west mesa, crosses the Rio Grande and becomes the main drag through downtown, and then begins a gentle ascent after crossing I-25 and climbing past the University of New Mexico campus into funky, hip, and gay-popular Nob Hill. Pictured here are some of the colorful storefronts and cafes along Route 66 in the heart of Nob Hill.

Flying Star Cafe - Flying Star Albuquerque - gay coffeehouses - gay-friendly Albuquerque cafes - gay Albuquerque bars - Albuquerque gay nightlife
Albuquerque has some less traditional gay nightlife options, including the highly inviting local coffeehouse-restaurant chain, Flying Star. These hip, smartly furnished hangouts are spacious and attractively decorated, several of them with fireplaces and most with large patios. There are six of them throughout Albuquerque. Page 10.

Albuquerque Hot-Air Ballooning Pictures - Albuquerque Balloon Festival - Gay-Friendly Hot-Air Ballooning Companies - Gay Albuquerque Photos -
Gay-friendly Albuquerque is considered the hot-air ballooning capital of the world, and dozens of outfitters here (along with a few in other parts of New Mexico) offer early-morning (and sometimes sunset) rides of the stunning Rio Grande valley - the views of the city and the cloud-scraping Sandia Mountains are something else. The Duke City also hosts the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta each fall - it's one of New Mexico's biggest draws. Page 9.

Sandia Peak Tramway - Albuquerque Aerial Tram - World's Longest Tramway - Sandia Aerial Tramway Photos - Ski Sandia Pictures - Sandia Cable Car
The world's longest aerial tramway, the Sandia Peak Tramway (pictured here from the upper terminus) rises from Albuquerque's Northeast Heights neighborhood (elevation about 6,500 feet) to Sandia Crest, at about 10,400 feet. At the top you'll find numerous viewing areas, hiking trails along the top of the ridge as well as the La Luz Trail, which leads steeply down to Northeast Heights), a restaurant called High Finance, and Sandia downhill ski area (popular for mountain-biking) in summer. Hip and low-keyed Blackbird Buvette is one of downtown Albuquerque's most inviting little spots for a beer (they carry a few local brews) or cocktail, a light meal (crepes, burgers, breakfast served all day), a chance to watch a cool band (emphasis is on indie rock, folk, funk, acoustic), or just mingle with the eclectic, young-ish crowd that frequents this place. There's patio seating out front and in back, too, making this increasingly gay-popular spot especially pleasant on a warm evening. Page 18.

Scalo Albuquerque - Scalo Italian Restaurant Nob Hill - Gay-Friendly ABQ Restaurants - Romantic Italian Restaurants - Scalo ABQ Central Avenue
Nob Hill's many excellent restaurants include a long-time favorite of the gay community, Scalo, which serves sophisticated yet reasonably priced Northern Italian fare. The elegant restaurant with a large outdoor seating area overlooking bustling Central Avenue (aka historic Route 66) makes a fine setting for dinner, sipping wine, coffee and dessert, and lighter bar food. The kitchen emphasizes local, organic ingredients, and there's always a featured wine on the menu for just $15 a bottle. Page 29.

Frontier Restaurant Albuquerque - Frontier Diner ABQ - Albuquerque Late-Night Restaurants - Albuquerque Green-Chile Cheeseburgers - Frontier Nob Hill
Directly across from the campus of the University of New Mexico and established in 1971, the vaguely barn-like Frontier Restaurant is one of the state's great cheap-eats culinary treasures - a rambling collection of dining rooms hung with cowboy art and John Wayne portraits. Frontier had been open 24 hours for many years but currently serves food daily from 5 am until 1 am - plenty late to attract a curious mix of students, post-clubbing revelers, gays and lesbians, and regular folks. One of the prettiest spots in Albuquerque for a view of the region, and of the Sandia Mountains which rise above the city to the east, the Juan Tabo Basin Picnic Area is part of Cibola National Forest. Pictured here following a light snowfall (yes, Albuquerque actually receives about a foot of snow per year, a little less than Washington, DC), the Juan Tabo Basin is also the trailead for the strenuous La Luz Trail, which climbs more than 3,000 feet over 8 miles to Sandia Peak.
