Moby Dick San Francisco - Moby Dick Gay Bar - Moby Dick Castro - Moby Dick Bar 18th Street - San Francisco Castro Gay Scene - Gay Lounges Castro
Since 1979, the popular gay neighborhood bar Moby Dick has been a Castro fixture - one of several nightspots that figure in any queer-bar tour of the neighborhood. Set on the ground floor of a turreted gray Victorian house, this popular corner bar is most famous for the huge saltwater fish tank over the bar. This is a reliably good early-evening bar, and on weekends it remains quite crowded into the wee hours. Page 24.

Opened in the centrally located space that used to house the Bar on Castro (which moved and became the Bar on Church, or BOC), Q Bar is a terrific, attractive, and modern gay bar just across the street from the venerable Castro Theatre. Generally packed during happy hours and drawing a cute, stylish crowd of San Francisco gay A-listers, Q Bar has a number of fun theme nights - go-go boys on Wednesdays, an afternoon beer bust on Saturdays. Signature cocktails include the Tranny Chaser and Q-Jito. Page 21.

Among the dozen or so gay bars within a stone's throw of Castro and 18th streets, SF Badlands is arguably the most popular of the bunch. It's packed to the rafters on weekends and quite busy on other nights, catering to a relatively youthful (20s and 30s) bunch of guys. There's a bar and seating areas up front, and a mid-size dance floor in the back. SF Badlands is perhaps most famous for its well-attended Sunday beer blast, and happy hour specials are also quite a deal. Page 10.

Bars come and go in San Francisco's Castro, but The Cafe, which occupies the expansive upper level of a building on Market Street (near the corner of Castro Street) has held its own for many years, serving an eclectic mix of lesbians and gay men of all ages. There's a somewhat younger scene here compared with other Castro gay bars, especially on Friday Boy Bar and Saturday Delicious parties (lesbian), and Thursday Pan Dulce (Latino) nights. The Cafe has a great little patio, a pool area. Page 8.

An outpost of the original Taylor's in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena, the San Francisco Taylor's is famous for pretty much the same classic short-order California fare: huge and juicy burgers, milkshakes (try the white-pistachio one), rare-seared ahi burgers, and delicious garlic fries with parsley and melted butter. Boston's South End is not only one of the city's most scenic and historic neighborhoods, it's also ground-zero for the city's gay community. That being said, it's a very eclectic area, and as it's become increasingly fashionable over the years, and real-estate has become more costly, the South End has gradually morphed from seedy (in the '70s and '80s) to uber-gay (in the '90s) to merely progressive and elegant today. Here's a shot of a typically charming South End lane, Milford Street. Page 13.
