This is bad news if you show up on a busy evening (Delux doesn't take reservations), because the entire dining room is about the size of a Hummer. The downstairs area tends to be more about cruising, but there's gay porn showing late into the evening on both levels. Blackbird Bar San Francisco - Blackbird Castro - Blackbird Gay Bar San Francisco - Blackbird Market Street - Blackbird Wine Bar - Gay Cocktails Castro
Part of the new wave of more eclectic and sophisticated gay hangouts that have steadily been gaining in prevalence and popularity in the Castro, the dapper and convivial Blackbird Bar is along the hip Church Street corridor (right at the intersection with Market Street). Inside what was for many years the Expansion Bar you'll find handsome space filled with a mixed crowd of gays and straights, hipsters and wine lovers, and generally friendly and stylish sorts. Cocktails here are simply stellar. Page 4.

Cafe Du Nord San Francisco - Cafe Du Nord Market Street - Castro Live Music Clubs - Gay-Friendly Music Clubs - Cafe Du Nord and Swedish American Hall
The Castro's atmospheric Cafe Du Nord, with its cool old mahogany bar and gracefully detailed woodwork and architectural accents, has been a hot spot for knocking back cocktails and watching cutting-edge local and national bands since the late '70s. Set along Market Street a short walk from the neighborhood's gay-nightlife hub, Cafe Du Nord and the Swedish American Hall are very fun places to see a show, and there's also a very good, affordable restaurant. The crowd is mostly scenesters, Page 29.

Edge San Francisco - Edge Gay Bar 18th Street - Edge Gay Club Castro - Best Gay Happy Hours San Francisco - San Francisco Edge Bar - Edge Castro
A classic gay neighborhood bar that's part of pretty much any Castro bar crawl, the Edge is sort of a catch-all guys' hangout, tending to draw a somewhat older (30s, 40s, and 50s) bunch of local guys. The best qualities are stiff drinks, a fairly popular happy hour (and Sunday-afternoon crowd), and fun retro music. Page 13.

Eros San Francisco - Eros Gay Sex Club - San Francisco Gay Sex Venues - Eros Club Market Street - San Francisco Castro Cruising - Gay Bathhouses SF
Although there are no gay bathhouses within San Francisco city limits, per a 1984 court order that eliminated them, the city does have a couple of popular gay sex clubs, including Eros, which is on the edge of the Castro on Market Street - it's close to the Mission and Hayes Valley, by the busy Church Street Corridor. Eros has been going strong for many years and has the feel of a gay bathhouse, but without private rooms. There is a sauna, showers, steam rooms, and professional massage available. Page 41.

Esta Noche Gay Bar - Esta Noche Mission District - Gay Latino Bars San Francisco - California Queer Hispanic Clubs - Esta Noche 16th Street - SF Drag
The Mission has morphed into an eclectic, if self-consciously hip neighborhood in recent times, but for many years it was San Francisco's prime Latino neighborhood. It was during these years that Esta Noche opened, and it has remained the Bay Area's favorite gay Latino dance club ever since - a place where the bumping and grinding can get mightly intense on certain evenings. The drag shows on Friday and Saturday nights are among the dishiest in the city. Page 36.

Named for the legendary, late gay activist Harvey Milk, the quintessential gay brunch restaurant Harvey's - which opened in 1996 on the site of the old Elephant Bar (which has burned in a fire several years earlier) - is also one of the most popular queer bars in the Castro. Whether for evening cocktails or dinner, or to partake of the delicious brunch (served until 3 pm daily), Harvey's is a must-see for gay visitors. Inside the warmly decorated space are many photos of Harvey Milk. Page 26.

You won't find many better spots for people-watching in the Castro than the extensive balconies at the aptly named Lookout bar and restaurant (for years it was called the Metro). This airy and open space with a bit of a sport-bar theme has packed happy hours, serves tasty pizza (all-you-can-eat on Tuesdays), and even presents a pretty fun drag-show on Wednesdays. Although the Lookout pulls in a good mix of guys throughout the night, it's especially popular in the afternoon and early evening.

Not every nightspot in the Castro is a gay bar, with Lucky 13 a very good example. However, pretty much every bar in the Castro has at least a GLBT following, and a mixed crowd, and the lovably dive-y Lucky 13 lounge definitely fits into this category. This low-key, hipster-favored spot just off the Church Street Corridor carries more than two-dozen beers on tap (the specialty is Belgians), plus a good mix of cocktails. Music tends toward the unpredictable - from reggae to punk to rock. Page 34.

Midnight Sun San Francisco - Midnight Sun Gay Bar - Midnight Sun Video Bar - Castro Gay Video Bars - Midnight Sun Castro - Gay Cruise Bars Castro
Midnight Sun has been the definitive gay video bar of the Castro for many years now. It recently underwent a refurbishment (which explains the rather unfortunate exterior appearance from the photo I snapped here in spring 2010). This is a favorite stop when gay-bar-hopping in the Castro, and it's especially popular for happy hour, and for catching the latest queer-popular TV shows - American Idol, Project Runway, and plenty of old retro favorites (Queer as Folk among them). Page 7.

Mix San Francisco - Mix Gay Bar - Mix Castro - San Francisco Gay Sports Bars - Mix Gay Sports Bar Castro - Castro Gay Neighborhood Lounges - Mix SF
The laid-back Mix bar is one of the Castro's friendlier and more locals-oriented gay hangouts - it's a nice spot on a warm day, as there's a patio out back, and Mix sponsors a local GLBT softball team and cultivates a bit of a following with sports fans. It's a good spot to shoot pool, chat with locals (it's not especially loud), and people-watch. Page 17.

Since 1979, the popular gay neighborhood bar Moby Dick has been a Castro fixture - one of several nightspots that figure in any queer-bar tour of the neighborhood. Set on the ground floor of a turreted gray Victorian house, this popular corner bar is most famous for the huge saltwater fish tank over the bar. This is a reliably good early-evening bar, and on weekends it remains quite crowded into the wee hours. Page 24.

Opened in the centrally located space that used to house the Bar on Castro (which moved and became the Bar on Church, or BOC), Q Bar is a terrific, attractive, and modern gay bar just across the street from the venerable Castro Theatre. Generally packed during happy hours and drawing a cute, stylish crowd of San Francisco gay A-listers, Q Bar has a number of fun theme nights - go-go boys on Wednesdays, an afternoon beer bust on Saturdays. Signature cocktails include the Tranny Chaser and Q-Jito. Page 21.

Among the dozen or so gay bars within a stone's throw of Castro and 18th streets, SF Badlands is arguably the most popular of the bunch. It's packed to the rafters on weekends and quite busy on other nights, catering to a relatively youthful (20s and 30s) bunch of guys. There's a bar and seating areas up front, and a mid-size dance floor in the back. SF Badlands is perhaps most famous for its well-attended Sunday beer blast, and happy hour specials are also quite a deal. Page 10.

Bars come and go in San Francisco's Castro, but The Cafe, which occupies the expansive upper level of a building on Market Street (near the corner of Castro Street) has held its own for many years, serving an eclectic mix of lesbians and gay men of all ages. There's a somewhat younger scene here compared with other Castro gay bars, especially on Friday Boy Bar and Saturday Delicious parties (lesbian), and Thursday Pan Dulce (Latino) nights. The Cafe has a great little patio, a pool area. Page 8.

One of San Francisco's venerable gay-nightlife icons, Twin Peaks Tavern is said to have been the very first gay bar in America to have clear (as opposed to opaque or covered) glass windows, something unheard back when it opened in the early '70s. Two lesbians opened the bar, but it's had a mostly male following over the years, and these days it tends to draw a somewhat seasoned bunch of guys, and a few women. Page 12.

Toad Hall is a laid-back gay neighborhood in the Castro, part of the big clutch of gay hangouts near the intersection of Castro and 18th. For many years, this space held the Pendulum Bar - it became Toad Hall in 2009 and has become popular for its good-size patio - it doesn't hurt that such neighborhood hot spots as SF Badlands and Edge are close by. Toad Hall has one of the better happy hours in the Castro. Page 32.
