A little less than two miles past Sunset Beach on the Kamehameha Highway (and before you get to Waimea Bay), watch for Pupukea Road on your left (across from Pupukea fire station). This road will take you up to the Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site and O'ahu's largest Hawaiian heiau (temple), covering almost 2 acres.

Ka'ena
The farthest point west on O'ahu is Ka'ena, the heat. Aptly named, this area appears almost barren and desolate. Ka'ena Point is no longer accessible, even to four-wheel-drive vehicles, but is a great place for a leisurely hike. One of the state's best examples of coastal lowland and dune ecosystems, it was made a nature reserve in 1983.

What was begun as a landscape project, Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Garden, has grown to 240 acres that have been developed into a myriad of diverse gardens, complete with one of the largest collections of bronze sculpture in the United States.

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge
The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is a must stop for visitors to Kauai's scenic north shore. The centerpiece of the refuge is the historic Kilauea Lighthouse, built in 1913 and in operation until 1976 when it was replaced by an automatic beacon.

Secret Beach, Kauai
Kauapea Beach, better known as Secret Beach, is best known for two reasons. It was where the song I'm As Corny As Kansas in August in the film version of South Pacific was filmed. It also is known as one of Kauai's clothing optional or nude beaches.

'Anini Beach, Kauai
This 2+ mile coastline including 'Anini Beach is one of of the most beautiful on Kauai and the views are stunning. Off shore is the longest continuous reef on Kauai, which makes this area of the coast some of the safest for summer swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, spear fishing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Princeville, Kauai
Princeville is a planned resort and residential community that sits on about 11,000 acres on a 200-foot promontory between 'Anini Beach and Hanalei Bay. It consists on numerous condominium and vacation ownership resorts, single family homes, a number of restaurants, a shopping center, the last gas station on the North Shore, two championship golf courses and the new St. Regis Princeville Resort.

Hanalei Valley Overlook
The Hanalei Valley Overlook is a must stop especially on a clear day. From the overlook you'll get a fantastic view of the valley below with its taro fields bisected by the Hanalei River. If the foliage on the hillside has been cut back, you may even see the famous one-lane bridge that you'll soon cross as you enter the valley.

Hanalei Pier and Hanalei Bay, Kauai
Hanalei Pier itself has been used in numerous films including Beachhead and the Wackiest Ship in the Army, but it and the adjoining beach will forever be associated with one motion picture, Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific.
