The Best Beaches in Thailand - Pattaya Beaches
Pattaya’s beaches are abundant but aren’t as clean or quiet as the beaches in other parts of the country. They do offer great value and are very convenient if you’re coming from Bangkok. If you’re heading to Pattaya but want a quiet beach to relax on, the best bet is one of the resorts between Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach. Many of these have their own private beaches.

Things to do before you arrive in Thailand

Best Beaches - Koh Chang, Thailand and Surrounding Islands
Koh Chang, Thailand’s second largest island, is just off the coast of Trat Province on the east side of the Gulf of Siam. Koh Chang has everything you’d want in a tropical island – white sandy beaches, plenty of palm trees, and warm, clear water. But for now at least it doesn’t have the big crowds you’ll find in more popular Phuket or Koh Samui. That's not to say it's entirely undeveloped. There are plenty of resorts and roads and more on the way.

Beaches in Thailand – Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi, a small island a couple of hours by boat from Phuket, is an island lover's dream. Clear water, majestic cliffs and soft sand make Koh Phi Phi a picture-perfect paradise. The only downside? Thousands of others already know about it and it's in danger of being overrun by boats, guest houses and tourists. Still, if you're not bothered by crowds or overdevelopment, you might find it the most beautiful place on earth.

Best Beaches in Thailand – Patong Beach
Patong beach on Phuket is the island's most popular beach and probably the most popular beach in all of Thailand. For many vacationers, it's the best of both worlds - a gorgeous, big, wide beach with white sand and warm water and plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs in the surrounding area.

Best Beaches in Thailand – Railey Beach
Railey Beach is one of Thailand's most beautiful beaches. Although it's on the mainland in Krabi Province, because it's only accessible by boat, it has a desert island feel. There are Railey beaches, West Railey and East Railey. East Railey is mud flats and mangroves. It's just a few minutes by foot to West Railey, but make sure you know which beach you're staying on.

Best Beaches in Thailand – Hua Hin
Hua Hin Beach, just a few hours by car, train or bus from Bangkok, is one of the most popular beaches in Thailand. The beach itself is a long, flat stretch of sand that slopes gently into the ocean, and it's surrounded by a small town with plenty of hotels, resorts and guest houses as well as places to eat and drink.

Pranburi Beach (South of Hua Hin)
Pranburi, a beach town on the west side of the Gulf of Thailand about 20 miles south of popular resort town Hua Hin, has become more and more popular with local tourists and international visitors over the past decade. Like Cha-am to the north, it's much less developed than Hua Hin, so while there aren't as many conveniences, there also aren't as many crowds. Pranburi also has what some would argue is a much nicer beach than Hua Hin and Cha-am, making it worth the extra hour or so it takes to get there from Bangkok.

Tips on Driving a Rental Car in Thailand
Getting a rental car in Thailand can be an excellent and convenient way to explore the country. Though driving in any foreign place takes a little getting used to, once you get out of Bangkok, Thailand is actually a really pleasant place to drive. Highways are well maintained and serve most of the country, and road customs are not too difficult to understand. Watch out in Bangkok, or any big city, though, as traffic can be horrible and tailgating and cutting in rules are probably much different than you're used to.

Touring Ayutthaya
The old part of Ayutthaya is a fascinating, historically significant place with some beautiful ruins. And since it's just a couple of hours from Bangkok, it's a very popular day trip for tourists. But, despite the fact that thousands and thousands of people from all over the world visit every year, it's just not a very tourist friendly place.

Bargaining in Thailand
In some countries, bargaining is par for the course and no one would even consider buying a newspaper without asking for a discount. In other countries, the quoted price is the price you're going to pay, no matter what. If you know which of those types of countries you're in, it makes things much easier. Alas, Thailand seems to fall into neither category, making things a little confusing, and potentially a little embarrassing, for the average tourist consumer.

What Not to Wear in Thailand
Thailand is a very relaxed place, and given the image of bikini-clad vacationers frolicking on beaches and backpackers in shorts and sandals exploring cities, you may think that anything goes in terms of clothing.

Best Beaches in Thailand – Khao Lak
Imagine a vacation spot just an hour from an international airport, with beautiful soft sand beaches, a good selection of places to stay, from cheap bungalows to family-friendly resorts, enough bars and restaurants to keep from getting bored and not too much development. It’s not a fantasy, it’s Khao Lak, just north of the popular island of Phuket. It's not an island, but you won’t really notice that when you’re on the beach – it’s most popular beaches are far more tranquil than Phuket’s.

Phuket Beaches -- Sirinat National Park
Thailand’s smallest national parks sits on one of the country’s most valuable pieces of real estate in Phuket, a long, narrow strip of west-facing beach-front property that starts at the northern tip of the island and extends all the way down to just past the airport.

Sairee Beach, Koh Tao
At about 1 mile long, Sairee Beach is the longest stretch of beach on the little island of Ko Tao and it's also the most popular.

The Mae Sa Loop
The Mae Sa Valley, just outside of the city of Chiang Mai, is one of the region’s most scenic areas and it’s a popular destination for travelers who want to get out into the countryside but don’t want to travel too far out.

Cha-am Beach -- Hua Hin, Cha Am
Cha-am, a beach town on the west side of the Gulf of Thailand, is lesser known internationally than Hua Hin just 20 miles to the south, but is still very popular among local tourists and European visitors to the Kingdom. It’s also not as developed as Hua Hin (which means you won't find a Starbucks or many crowds, but many visitors consider a big selling point). Still, Cha-am has a good selection of hotels across all price points, great casual seafood restaurants, and the same flat, sweeping beaches that have made Hua Hin so popular.

Bangkok's Dusit Zoo
Bangkok's Dusit Zoo is a fun, family friendly excursion.

Thailand's Pi Ta Khon Festival
One of the most fun, and most interesting festivals in Thailand is the Pi Ta Khon Festival, which takes place over three days between March and July in the Northeast province of Loei.

Are Thai Trains Safe?
For a long time I wholeheartedly recommended traveling by train in Thailand. But the recent spate of accidents and derailments has me wondering whether or not it's a smart way to travel. I can't offer you any definitive answers here, but I urge you to read through the facts and come to your own reasoned conclusion before you make your plans.

Pattaya Bars – Nightlife in Pattaya
The Pattaya bar scene is notorious and is something most outsiders find shocking. Go-go bars, strip clubs, scantily clad women dancing on poles. You name it, it happens in Pattaya. So, as you can imagine, it’s not the most family friendly destination in Thailand! But even if you’re not into strip clubs, Pattaya’s night life can be fun since it has an “up all night, dance till dawn” vibe to it.

The Thai Monarchy
Thailand's monarchy, and its current King in particularly, are a very important part of Thai culture.

Beaches in Thailand – Koh Samet
Koh Samet, the little island just a few hours from Bangkok, used to be a destination for city folks looking for a weekend escape and backpackers enjoying the laid back atmosphere, pleasant beaches and inexpensive bungalows. Koh Samet has changed! These days, you’ll still find plenty of Bangkokians arriving straight from work on a Friday night, and lots of backpackers hanging out on the beaches, but you’ll also find some high-end beach resorts and villas and vacationers from all over the world.

Best Beaches in Thailand – Karon Beach
Though Phuket’s Karon Beach gets less hype than neighboring Patong Beach, many visitors consider it one of Phuket’s best vacation spots. Karon has soft sand, clear water and plenty of places to lounge out in the sun. Because it’s so big (nearly two miles across), it never feels overcrowded, even during high season. There are plenty of places to stay and things to do when you’re not at the beach but it’s a lot quieter and less built up than bustling Patong Beach.

Bangkok Shopping - Shopping in Bangkok's MBK Mall
Some of the best shopping in Bangkok is at MBK, formally known as Mahboonkrong Mall. Though the mall is in the same neighborhood as some of the city’s expensive shopping centers, it caters to mid-market shoppers and has plenty of affordable clothes, shoes, accessories, electronics and souvenirs. It’s one of the best places in the city to buy mobile phones, has lots of clothing and shoes, and is also quite well know for its shops selling knock-off bags and watches. They even sell fake iPods!

Bangkok Shopping – Siam Square
Siam Square is a cluster of shops in central Bangkok with small boutiques, stalls, restaurants, movie theatres and cafes. The area is adjacent to one of Bangkok’s universities, so much of the merchandise is geared towards a younger crowd. There are plenty of cheap, fun, funky things to buy and plenty to eat, too.

Bangkok Shopping – Shopping in Bangkok’s Night Market
The Night Market, called Suan Lum in Thai, is a market with lots of stuff for tourists and others just across the street from Lumpini Park. Though prices aren’t as good as you’ll find in some more local markets, it’s convenient and fun.

The Songkran holiday is the Thai New Year celebration and takes place on April 13 – 15 every year. In Sanskrit, the word “Songkran” means “to move into” and on Songkran, Thais celebrate the fact that the sun is moving into Aries, the beginning of a new solar year.

Thai Massage – Guide to Massages in Thailand
Thai massage is one of the most popular things visitors try when they come here on vacation. Many spas and massage parlors in Thailand offer oil massages (like Swedish massage) and aromatherapy massages if you want to stick to something familiar. But if you’re looking something a little different, consider Thai massage.

Thailand Beaches – Pattaya Beach
Pattaya Beach is a busy, crowded beach with lounge chairs, umbrellas and beach bars stretching nearly the whole 2.5 miles of sand and lots of boat traffic in the horizon. Don’t worry about getting bored, there are plenty of beach water sports from jet skis to wind surfing to paragliding. It’s not a quiet place but if you’re looking for a little relaxation, your best bet on Pattaya Beach is to rent a lounge chair or have a Thai massage right on the beach.
