Old Sacramento - Delta King
A visit to Old Sacramento is not complete without a stop at the Delta King. The authentic 285-foot riverboat floats, no longer cruises, on the Sacramento River. Old Sacramento - Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum
The Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum is a replica of a traditional one-room school that were found throughout the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills during the 1800s. Authentic and replica schoolhouse fixtures furnish the building. Kids who visit the schoolhouse are treated to an arithmetic lesson by a volunteer docent dressed as costumed schoolmarms and school masters. The Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum is located at 1200 Front Street.

Reliving the Gold Rush at Old Sacramento
Stepping foot into Old Sacramento is like traveling back in time to California’s Gold Rush era. On any given visit, one can see the dirt being kicked up from the hooves of a horse drawing a carriage down the cobblestone streets. Wide and creaky wooden walkways lead up to restored buildings that used to house hotels, saloons and bathhouses. Now these structures are home to a myriad of shops, restaurants and bars entertaining the more than five million visitors to this State Historical Park.

Old Sacramento - Events All Year-Round
Throughout the year, Old Sacramento is a buzz with special events. From February to December, visitors can visit the museums for free, listen to non-stop jazz during Jazz Jubilee, relive the gold fever during Gold Rush days, or celebrate the yuletide during Heritage Holidays. Old Sacramento - California State Railroad Museum
The California State Railroad Museum is one of the most expansive museums in Old Sacramento. About half a million people visit the 100,000-square-foot, well regarded museum of its kind in North America. Rail enthusiasts can enjoy lavishly restored trains, while newcomers can learn how railroads influenced and changed American lives and economy. From April through September, the museum operates a six-mile, 40-minute ride on a steam-powered train.

Old Sacramento - Discovery Museum
Next door to the California State Railroad Museum is the family-friendly Discovery Museum. There are interactive exhibits allowing visitors to explore history, science, space and technology. The Gold Gallery provides a closer look at California’s Gold Rush with a simulated mine shaft and miner’s cabin. Visitors can learn how newspapers are published in the McClatchy Gallery. One cannot miss the breathtaking view from atop the glass floor exhibit highlighting five historic Sacramento districts.

Old Sacramento - The Firehouse
The Firehouse restaurant has been offering fine dining and memorable ambiance to Sacramentans for 40 years. The brick building was originally the home of the fire chief and volunteer crew of Engine Company No. 3 and was the first structure to be restored and designated a historical landmark. Diners can eat in the elegant dining room or enjoy the delta breeze in the tree-lined courtyard. The Firehouse is open for lunch and dinner and has an extensive wine menu.

Old Sacramento - B.F. Hastings Building
An ideal starting point for touring Old Sacramento is the B.F. Hastings Building, where one can find the Visitor’s Center. The structure was built following the great Sacramento fire in 1852. In June 1967, the State of California purchased the building to include it in the Old Sacramento restoration project. The B.F. Hastings Building is located on J and 2nd streets.

Old Sacramento - Wells Fargo History Museum
The Wells Fargo History Museum is located on the ground floor of the B.F. Hastings Building. Wells Fargo was among the building’s first tenants. The bank bought gold, sold paper drafts, and offered rapid delivery of gold for the growing 49er community. Exhibits include a scale model of the Wells Fargo Concord Stagecoach, original Howard & Davis gold scales, and a large safe for storing gold. The Wells Fargo History Museum is located at the corner of J and 2nd streets.

Old Sacramento - Pony Express Statue
Kitty corner to the Wells Fargo History Museum is The Pony Express Statue. The 15-foot, bronze statue and concrete base commemorates the 1,966-mile mail run from Sacramento to St. Joseph, Missouri. The city-to-city relay took less than 10 days to ride. Old Sacramento served as the western terminus of the Pony Express postal system. The Pony Express Statue is located at the corner of J and 2nd streets.

Old Sacramento Trains
Sacramento became the central trading post for the Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Merchants were able to trade at a greater volume because of the rail system. For a fee, visitors can take a train ride from Old Sacramento along the Sacramento River. Page 8.

Crocker Art Museum
The Crocker Art Museum was established in 1885 and is known as the longest, continuously running museum in the West. More than 160,000 people have visited the museum to enjoy Crocker's various and diverse exhibits, including California art, Asian art, international ceramics and Victorian architecture. Currently, the museum is undergoing an expansion that is estimated to triple in size. Crocker is among the many Sacramento museums found in the Downtown/Midtown/Old Sacramento area. Page 9.

California State Capitol Architecture

This historic building was designed by M.F. Butler and Ruben Clark in the 1860s. By 1874, the building was completed with a cost of $2.45 million. It was designed in the neoclassical style, echoing Greek and Roman influences.
