Reeling in a Fish - Pump and Wind
As I watch a lot of people who fish on my boat, it becomes evident that the actual process of reeling a fish in – that is “fighting” a fish – is new to most of them. The tendency is for them to simply start winding the reel handle regardless of what the fish is doing. Lots of reels end up with line so twisted it almost has to be replaced.

My Line Broke When I Set the Hook…
Many people have issues with their fishing line breaking for no apparent reason. Here is how and why braided fishing line sometimes breaks for no apparent reason.

Fish Migrations
Do fish migrate? If they do - and they do - do they migrate because of water temperature?

Casting to a Tailing Redfish
There are many anglers who claim to never have seen a tailing redfish. I think it turns out that these anglers may have actually seen some, but just didn’t know what they were seeing at the time. They can generally be found in a low water condition, either on an outgoing or an incoming tide, moving along the edge of oyster or bars. The crabs and other crustaceans that inhabit these areas are a favorite food source.

Winds Change Tidal Times
While the relative positions of the sun and moon dictate tide times and water heights, many people don’t realize what an important role the wind can play. Winds of fifteen knots or more can significantly affect fishing efforts that are timed to coincide with a tide change. It happened again recently on a trip timed to catch the incoming tide.

Fishing the Chum Slicks
From Texas all the way around and up the east coast, shrimp boats ply near shore waters in search of pink gold. More often than not, their work “day” is actually at night, and while the crew sleeps during the day, savvy anglers can catch fish right under the shrimp boat’s nose! Shrimpers deal with by-catch every day. Dragging the ocean bottom for shrimp necessarily traps numerous smaller fish and crabs in the nets, fish like small croaker, spots, drum, white trout, and whiting.

People begin to get brave and pay less attention to offshore fishing dangers.

Blues to Take Away Your Blues Fishing for Bluefish
Blues to Take Away Your Blues Fishing for Bluefish Saltwater Fishing Fishing for Bluefish is a Year Round Activity

Venting a Deep Water Fish
Over the years I have caught many fish from water deeper than about ninety feet that come to the surface with their stomach protruding from their mouth like a big balloon. Not doing my research, I though it was an air bladder, and while I knew it had to be vented, I never really studied the best way to accomplish the task.

Releasing Gut Hooked Fish
Many time fish are brought aboard with the hook buried in their stomach or gills. Ive watched people rip the hook out of these fish, insuring that that will not survive. Ive seen people keep fish they ordinarily would have released had the fish not been hooked so deep. Conservation of the resource dictates we find a way to release as many of these fish in as healthy a state as possible.

Do Not Vent Fish!
With everything we do concerning catch and release, perhaps the most controversial is releasing fish caught from deep water. Most fish coming up on a hook from depths of more than about 80 feet will have an expanded or burst air bladders (swim bladders).

Fort Macon Secrets
Secrets for fishing from Fort Macon on the coast of North Carolina

All Knotted Up
Have you ever hooked a fish, I mean a good fish, only to have your line apparently break just when you were about to land him? I have, and it is one of the most frustrating events a fisherman can experience. Most of the time when this happens, if you look at the end of the line carefully, you will find the line really did not break. Rather the knot came undone! And when you realize that fact, you become even more frustrated.

Trolling for Grouper
The Southeastern United States provide the best grouper fishing in the world, and they can be taken by any number of means. From gag grouper in at little as ten to twelve feet of water to the mighty warsaw grouper in several hundred feet of water , all grouper tend to like the same types of baits and presentations whether they are presented on the bottom or by trolling. Just remember, big bait, big fish, small bait, small fish.

How Big Can a Redfish Grow - Fishing for Redfish
How big can a redfish grow? My son, Tom, along with Jason Marsh and Jonathon Richard from Jacksonville were pondering that question this week.

All About Redfish
The redfish or red drum has become one of the most sought after fish on the Gulf and Atlantic shores. Primarily an inshore fish, it became popular as a food fish after being offered as blackened redfish in New Orleans restaurants. It became popular as a game fish as more former bass tournament anglers got turned on to inshore saltwater fishing. It now is the target of numerous professional redfish tournaments. Here are some articles and information on catching these beautiful spot tail bass.

Redfish in the Surf - Surf Fishing - Redfish
Spring is the time for the fish to begin showing up in the surf. Schools of baitfish make their way north up the Atlantic coast, and predator fish follow right behind. Its sort of like a moving cafeteria to these predators food on the hoof so to speak.Menhaden and mullet, the two big Ms of the baitfish world, are followed by a variety of fish. Cobia and tarpon are arguably the most sought after. Redfish are mostly ignored during this time of year.

Huge Red Drum in Coastal Inlets - Catching Big Redfish
Up and down the eastern seaboard of the United States, huge red drum (redfish) can be caught in the fall by just about anyone willing to soak a bait on the bottom and wait. These bruisers congregate in the channels in the fall months, and light tackle is definitely NOT the way to go to catch one.

Stand Up Rods - Can You Take Them
Stand up rods came on the scene many years ago, but only in the last several years have they become immensely popular. These short, fast taper rods offer the angler the opportunity to literally go one-on-one with some awfully hard fighting fish. And the shortness of the rod makes the fight even more personal.

ALbemarle Sound Rockfish - Catching Striped Bass in North Carolina
Fall weather means more than just a change in temperatures for anglers living around the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. It means rockfish (striped bass) season has started and for the next seven months they will be able to take home some of these hard fighting fish. We fished the sound recently to find out just what these rockfish were all about.

Catch Striped Bass in Delaware Bay
good action with big striped bass up to 44 inches was happening at the Horseshoe (general area: 27200/42820) in upper Delaware Bay by chunking bunker. Other good locations to chunk outsized striped bass include the upper end of 20-Foot Slough (27157/42828) and the north tip of 60-Foot Slough at Loran C 27173/42800.

Flounder on Artificials
It would appear that a flounder, lying on the bottom waiting for food, would not be a very aggressive fish, one wiling to reach out and grab a lure. I spend most of my time looking for flounder with live bait, but I was surprised at their aggressiveness when presented with an artificial bait like a grub.

Night Time Flat Fish - Flounder Gigging
Now is the time to begin seeing the flounder as they move inland from their winter offshore homes. Miles of intracoastal waterways, tidal creek shorelines and flats can be found from the Northeast coast , down around Florida, all the way to Texas. Flounder can be taken with a gig and a light using this method in all of these areas, but check your local laws and regulations before starting out.

Pounding the Flounder - Again
My son Tom and grandson James took a day together to fish some docks in the St Augustine, Florida, area. Tom has been working with James, teaching him some flounder and redfish fishing basics.

Fishing Around a Red Tide
A pretty severe red tide occurred along the North Florida coast recently. Along with thousands of dead fish, it closed beaches and put a dent in the tourist industry. It also changed some fishing plans, changes that actually turned out for the good.

Is There a Best Boat to Own?
Those of us who live along the coast face a dilemma when it comes to choosing a boat. Either we are well enough off to afford two or more boats, or we try to choose a single boat to serve all our needs. Is there really a best boat to own?

Approaching Storm
Storms and weather are usually not as bad as I depicted here, but when a bad one does come around, you should be able to deal with whatever situation develops. A little smarts on the front end and common sense during the storm can save not only your boat, but also perhaps your life.

The Effects of Water Temperature
Water temperature plays such an important part in fishing that every angler needs to pay attention and react to even subtle variances. Fish are no different than a lot of animals when it comes to heat and cold. They want to stay comfortable.

Does a Storm Affect Your Fishing?
Hurricane season and winter storms both bring to light several questions that are asked every year when storms plow through the Gulf of Mexico and up and down the Atlantic seaboard. Do these storms affect the fishing?

Fishing the First Cold Front
Fall fishing can be fantastic in all areas of the country. However, that first cold front and cold weather that comes through can be a real threat to your catch rate. Planning ahead and modifying your approach can mean the difference between success and failure.

Cubera Snapper Fishing Tips - How to Catch Cubera Snapper
While cubera snapper are found from New England down throughout the Caribbean to South America, they are not found in great numbers anywhere in their range. The High Cost of Fishing - Boats for Sale
As I look around my area these days, it seems more and more boats for sale are showing up on the roadsides. Most of these boats for sale are big-engine gas guzzlers that people are trying to offload because of the rising fuel prices in the US. Many of them have twin engines, which drink even more fuel.

Fishing the Backwater - Saltwater Marshes
Saltwater marshes are a part of the estuary system, the nursery if you will, for a variety of fish. They are comprised of a number of winding creeks, sloughs, and flats that change dramatically with the incoming and outgoing tide.

Choosing the Right Terminal Tackle
Bottom fishing, whether inshore or in deep offshore waters, necessarily means making a choice on the terminal tackle you plan to use. Many anglers catch fewer fish as a result of a poor choice or no choice at all.

Fishing Without Bait
How many of us have ever left the dock and headed out to fish only to find you left the bait in a cooler on the dock? Its a long ride back to the dock, and at the price of fuel today, it makes it very expensive to head back and retrieve it. Try fishing without bait!

Fishing Line Size Makes a Difference
You can catch more fish on smaller line if you know how to do it!

All About Fishing Tackle - Fishing Tackle
Tips, suggestions and how to information about saltwater fishing tackle and accessories.

Fishing a Jig Head
There are a lot of terminal tackle choices on the market. Some are simple; some are complicated. All can be as expensive as you would like them to be. My personal choice for most of my inshore fishing (with natural bait or with a grub) is a jig head.

What’s in a Swivel - Fishing tackle
There are three or four basic types of swivels, all of them designed for the specific purpose of preventing line twist. When a bait twirls in the water or a hooked fish spins, the swivel is there to turn (swivel) and allow the terminal tackle freedom to spin while keeping your line from twisting.

Circle Hooks to the Rescue!
As a catch and release fisherman I am always concerned about the welfare of the fish I release. So it is with a great deal of interest that I fished this last trip using circle hooks. These hooks have been around for a long time, but only recently have they been used to rescue and improve catch and release survival.

Setting the Hook
With the possible exception of sheepshead, setting the hook on a fish is at once both the easiest and the most misunderstood action that anglers can take. I watch anglers all the time, and I find that different anglers have different techniques even when fishing for the same fish.

What Makes a Fish Bite
Anglers the world over have always struggled with that question. I know times when the fish were visible, lots of them, and they would not so much as nibble at even a live bait presented to them. What reason is there for a fish not to bite?

Let's Catch Some Sheepshead - Fishing for Convict Fish
Got your bait? Got your tackle? Ready to go? Ok! Lets get crackin' on those sheepshead! One reader did ask last week whether these were Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus), or the California variety (Semicossyphus pulcher). These that I am writing about are the former, the Atlantic variety.

Amazing Tripletail Fishing
Tripletail. The name comes from and describes the shape of the fish's dorsal and anal fins and tail. Extending back, broad and full, the fins help give the appearance of three tails. It is generally a dark brown color, although I have caught some tripletail that had a mottled brown and off-white coloration. Fishing for tripletail is fun and exciting.

Jigging the Mangroves - Saltwater Fishing
Mangroves are found all over the world in subtropical and tropical waters: the[R]southern half of Florida, Texas, Mexico and the Caribbean. And fishing these mangroves with jigs[R]can provide some of the most productive fishing to be found.
