How to Edit Wikipedia Content
In some cases, you may search for a term in Wikipedia and find that a page does not currently exist. If nothing comes up from a search, you should see a “ask for it to be created” and then a “Create an article now!” link on the following page. That will take you to the Wikipedia Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of creating the page.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
Although you can edit content anonymously, you should know that Wikipedia will record your IP address when you make edits. It’s not an absolute requirement to have an account to start editing Wikipedia content, but it’s highly recommended if you want to earn trust within the community and keep track of edits. In the top right corner of every page, you should see a link that says “Log in / create an account.” Creating an account is free and simple. All you need is a username, a password and an optional email address. Now that you have an account set up and you are familiar with the editing guidelines, you might think that it would be okay to just start editing pages right away. You could, but there are some extra steps you should probably do first. Go to the next page to see what you need to do next.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
Type in almost any keyword in Google and the Wikipedia page for that keyword is almost certain to appear somewhere on the front page. For many, Wikipedia has become a primary source of information and the go-to place for answering a variety of questions on almost any topic imaginable. Wikipedia is a publicly-edited online encyclopedia that has about 100,000 regular contributors actively working to create and edit content in over 280 different languages. If you think have information from reliable sources to contribute to a certain page or pages on Wikipedia, you can actually make those edits yourself. Follow this guide through to the next pages to find out how you can take the proper steps needed for editing Wikipedia content.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
Some company owners and PR representatives like to think that they can head on over to Wikipedia and make the changes and edits of their company page to positively reflect its image. Unfortunately, this goes against Wikipedia’s editing guidelines. Their editing guidelines strictly prohibit individuals to edit content when a conflict of interest exists. And even though editing can be done anonymously, Wikipedia can easily pinpoint which organizations or individuals have edited their own pages. The bottom line? Be sure to follow the guidelines. Before you do anything, take a look at the Wikipedia guidelines page and get to know the editing guidelines and deletion guidelines.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
Look for spelling and grammatical mistakes. Make sure all facts are cited properly. You can select the “Show preview” button to preview your page or the “Show changes” to see how your updated content compares to previous content. Once you’re happy with it, click “Save page.” You may also wish to check the “Watch this page” box to add it to your watchlist so you can monitor future edits.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
Before you make any edits, it’s a good idea to take the time to look at how it’s been done by the contributors who have previously edited content. To do that, you should monitor the pages contained in your watchlist several times a week. Wikipedia has a help section for watching pages. By selecting “View history” at the top of any page, you can see the revisions, their dates, the names of the users, the IP addresses of anonymous users and several other pieces of information.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
At the top of any existing Wikipedia page, you should see an “Edit” option. Click this to open the editing field. Now would be a good time to refresh your memory on the editing guidelines and the deletion guidelines once more. In addition, you should review the style guidelines and the content guidelines before you start changing and adding content. Tip: Remember that your content must be verifiable, which should include references to other sources on the Internet, books or any other reputable source. Double check that your sources are trustworthy, confirm that all information doesn’t involve any instances of copyright infringement and ensure that all content remains unbiased.
How to Edit Wikipedia Content
Essentially, you need to prove that you’re a reliable contributor to Wikipedia so that your edits stay in place.
